Codes and Conventions of Magazine front covers identified in my research

Thursday 11 November 2010

the sumary on my magazine!

My magazine will be a new 6th from magazine that will be based on sport in the college. My target audience will consist of in the region of 16-18 years old but will still be suitable for younger children to read such as 12-15 years old and even the adults so the kids can take the magazine home for the parents to read.

For the preliminary section we looked at a range of different magazine front covers that targeted different audience such as different sex’s, cultures, and races, religions and wealth ness. We also looked at school magazines to see who they where targeting and why? We then did our individual research such as finding a wide range of different magazines covering different topics and then annotating them seen above.
At first I thought it was going to be very hard for individuals to do but then as I went on I kept founding out the more research you do the easier it gets as you are learning more and more every time you do any research and it doesn’t have to even be in-depth research. I ended up finding it easy to handle and I think annotating magazines is one of the best ways in finding out what makes a good magazine!
I started off by researching a magazine I no well and used to read when I was younger, ‘four four two’. This was a great help as I already new a lot about his magazine and the main layout of the front covers. Then I researched my schools magazine to see how it compared to ‘four four two’.  I then went onto investigating other schools from around the borough’s magazines to see who they are targeting the children that go to the school or the parents/guardians. All of what I did at first help me greatly as now I know who I am targeting, what my magazine will be about and why, the layout I will be following and content of the front cover will be.
I only had to adapt a couple things as most of my research went well but I did come across some small boundaries. The main one I found my self struggling on was when I went to research some of the ‘four four two’ magazine lay outs I found out some of the websites where blocked for child safety even though they contain no images or text that could offend children. To overcome this I had to carry on researching the same magazine but try to find it on a different web site. In the end it paiyed off and I found the ones I was looking for. The only bad thing is I wasted valuable time which could have been put to better use. I also adapted my researched as there is not that many school magazines so when we came to looking at them we had a very limited view on them as schools did not produce that many as we thought they would.
Some of the techniques used to encouraged teenage readers are mainly catching there eye. What I mean by this is they use techniques such as big bold headline to grab there attention. When they have got that they would put pictures on the front cover that will make them want to buy it such as for boys they would put stuff to do with football or girls or any electronic gaming devices. They would also put catchy headlines using some kind of slang writing to make them feel the writer is one of them and knows what they want. They would also use colours very carefully such as if they wanted to target teenage girls they may use; pink, purple, yellow or red.
I intend to target teenagers ranging from the age of 16-18. I will be doing this as this is my age category meaning I will know what they want and I know how I can give them what they want. Also for a secondary school magazine I think that is the perfect age group as they would be the ones actually reading it them selves I find any one younger would just throw it in there bags and not read it.
My magazine will be called ‘aim higher’. I have chosen this as the content to the magazine would be about aiming higher in your chosen sport such as if you enjoy playing football with your friends aim to go and join a team to get more out if it. I will be sticking to three colours black yellow and white. I chose these three colours as I am sticking to the school colours black and yellow but also white is opposite black meaning them two colours go extremely well with each other.
I will be following the normal place of title at the top of the page in big bold capitals in a yellow writing. I will have a main picture of my self cut out of the scenery with a black back ground. I will have a main story line with a small quotation across the middle of the picture.
I will have different story headlines each side of the page in yellow and white writing making them short and sharp to not give too much away. I will also grab the reader’s eyes with offers on free merchandise which will persuade them to buy it more.
I will be using ear piece pictures to make the reader understand any headlines I put on there easier etc.  I will place my barcode to the bottom left corner so it is out the way of any information I am giving to the reader.
I am going to make sure I chose my font carefully so EVERY word is easy to read as I want to make it easier for the younger children to read even though I have targeted older students it is still more of an option to hold a wider audience.
